What the standard checks
Four checks before
the mark goes on.
Independent testing has found supplements with less than the label said, and things that shouldn't have been there. You couldn't tell by looking. NSF/ANSI 173 is built to catch exactly that.
The label is true
NSF verifies that the supplement facts panel reflects what is in the product. On ours that is one line: creatine monohydrate.
Nothing that shouldn't be there
Screened for heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, chromium VI), for microbes including Salmonella, E. coli and Staph. aureus, for yeast and mold, and for mycotoxins.
The plant is audited
Certification includes detailed audits of the facility that makes it, not only a test of a sample that was sent in.
It keeps being checked
NSF runs annual audits and periodically retests certified products. In the certificate's own words, the company is audited for compliance at regular intervals.
What it is and what it isn't. NSF/ANSI 173 is NSF's Contents Certified program for dietary supplements. It is a different program from NSF Certified for Sport, which also screens for substances banned in sport. Source: nsf.org, Product and Ingredient Certification.
